Ancestral Burgess Families #1 A-S

(Thanks to the participants for the use of their data)

The families included herein are listed in alphabetical order by the name of their earliest known Burgess Project ancestor. The information about each line has been developed from the background data supplied by each participant on his family, supplemented by independent genealogical research. Most of the female children of a particular individual are omitted, since our Y-surname project is focused on direct-male descents. An asterisk (*) in front of a name indicates that the individual is covered in another paragraph down below.

The haplogroups listed for each family are mostly computer projections generated by Family Tree DNA; a few have been verified through actual testing, and are so noted. The commonest and most recently established of all the groups, R1b1, represents the underlying Celtic populations of northern Spain, France, and the British Isles. The second most common group, I, derives from Scandinavia and Northern Europe. The others listed are relatively uncommon.

None of the genealogical data listed here should be regarded as definitive, except where demonstrated and supported by DNA research.

James Burgess of Fayette Co., (West) Virginia

[Haplotype I1a]

James Burgess was born about 1790 in Virginia. He may be the same individual as James McDaniel, possibly a natural son of James Smith McDaniel and Mary Burgess, the daughter of William Burgess of Bedford Co., VA (see that family), who was bound to John Grant in 1791 in Bedford Co., VA; and/or the same person as the James Burgess, presumed brother of Keziah Burgess (see that family), who was bound to John Nichols, Sr. (the same individual to whom Keziah was bound in 1791) in 1795 in Bedford Co., VA.

James married Rachel Huddleston on 27 October 1810 in Bedford Co., Virginia. He is listed there as unmarried in the 1810 census, and in the personal property tax records there from 1811-18, sometimes associated with a William Burgess, a likely cousin or brother. He may be listed in the 1820 census for Bedford Co. and also possibly in Kanawha Co., (West) Virginia; he is listed in 1830 in Logan Co., (West) Virginia, and in the 1840-50 censuses for Fayette Co., (West) Virginia, but does not appear actually to have moved between 1820-50 (the counties were split off from each other in succession). He is not the son of Thomas Burgess of Logan Co., the youngest son of William Burgess of Bedford Co., Virginia, as has sometimes been speculated. James Burgess died in Fayette Co. in 1852, having had at least six sons:

1. Austin Burgess (1811-1860+) of Fayette Co., WV

2. Allen Burgess (1819-1880+) of Fayette Co., WV

Allen Burgess is the ancestor of Daniel K. Burgess; Henry Burgess is the ancestor of Keith E. Burgess.

Test results received from two representatives in this line match each other; they have a common male ancestor, James Burgess. They do not currently match the numbers of any other Burgess Project family.

James Burgess of Jackson Co., Tennessee

[Haplotype R1b1b2—confirmed by test]

Note: This family is affiliated with those of William Burgess of Montgomery Co., Maryland, Edward Burgess of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, Austin Burgess of Laclede Co., Missouri, Samuel H. Burgess of Calhoun Co., Florida, and Edward Burgess of Monongalia Co., West Virginia.

James Burgess was born about 1804 in South Carolina. He married firstly Resela __ about 1836, and secondly Mary __ about 1855. He is listed on the 1836 tax list and the 1840-70 censuses for Jackson Co., Tennessee. An 1856 lawsuit filed in Jackson Co. (James Burgess vs. D. G. Shepherd, Administrator of the Estate of William Vinson) mentions that James made a trip in 1853 to Georgia “concerning his father’s estate.”

James may be the son of Josiah Burgess, who was born about 1786 in Pennsylvania (possibly a mistranscription for Virginia), and is listed in the 1820-30 (in 1830 as “Joel Burgess”) and 1850 censuses for Jackson Co., Tennessee, but has not been found in 1840. In 1850 census Josiah appears with a new wife, Mary Holliman, and daughter (the latter, Mary Sina Burgess Maxwell [1849-1938], indicates in her later death record that her father Josiah had been born in North Carolina). He apparently died by 1860. A Josiah Burgess is listed in the 1810 census for the Kershaw District, South Carolina; other Burgesses in the county include Tim Burgess (son of John Burgess) and John Burgess (son of Timothy Burgess I) of the Thomas Burgess line of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia; John Burgess appears to be listed there in 1800.

James Burgess was a blacksmith. He apparently died in Jackson Co. about 1872, when his wife attempted to claim his land through a lawsuit. He had six sons, four by his first wife, and two by his second:

*1. Josiah Burgess II (1837-1911) of Jackson Co., TN

2. James Burgess Jr. (1841-1850+), died young

3. Thomas Burgess (1845- )

4. William Burgess (1850- )

5. James Burgess III (1855- )

6. John T. Burgess (1857- )

First Branch: Josiah Burgess II

Josiah Burgess II (also called Joseph Oliver Burgess, Joseph Burgess, and Joe Burgess) was born in March 1837 in Jackson Co., Tennessee (according to the 1850 census); as he aged, he moved his reported year of birth backward to 1823. He is not the same person as Joel Burgess, son of Thomas Burgess of White (later Putnam) Co., Tennessee, a descendant of William Burgess of King George Co., Virginia (see that family). He married Mary Elizabeth Veteto about 1855, and secondly her niece, Nancy Veteto, on 4 April 1881 in Jackson Co. He is listed in the 1870-1900 censuses for Jackson Co., including a rare surviving fragment of the 1890 census; Nancy is listed as head of the family in 1910. He died there on 10 August (or 11 June) 1911, having had ten sons, three by his first wife, and seven by his second:

1. John Shirley Burgess (1856/58-1933)

2. James Matthew Burgess (1865-1947)

3. Joseph “Jody” Burgess Jr. (1870/74-1946)

7. (Alvin) Dero Burgess (1887-1958)

8. Bailey Burgess (1897-1968)

9. Oliver Burgess (1901-1913), died young

10. (Edd) Carmack Burgess (1906-1974)

Henry Burgess is the ancestor of J. Larry Burgess.

Test results received from one representative in this line confirm a genetic relationship with the lines of William Burgess of Montgomery Co., Maryland, Edward Burgess of Monongalia Co., (West) Virginia, Samuel H. Burgess of Calhoun Co., Florida, Austin Burgess of Laclede Co., Missouri, and Edward Burgess of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia; these families have a common Burgess ancestor, name unknown.

Note: This family is affiliated with that of Joseph Burgess of Bergen Co., New Jersey, and John Burgess of New Haven Co., Connecticut.

James Burgess was born about 1785 (or 1788) at Tillington, Sussex Co., England. He may be the son of James Burgess and Jane Brown, who married on 10 June 1785 at Tillington, Sussex Co. He married Sarah Muggeridge about 1826. He was an innkeeper at Petworth, Sussex, England, in 1837 (according to the Tithe Award map), managing an establishment there called “The Fox.” He is listed in the 1841 census for Petworth, Sussex Co., but his children are enumerated separately with Alfred and Emma Bridger, Sarah’s children by a previous marriage; he is listed in the 1851 census for Wesboro Green, Sussex Co., and in 1861 at Horsham, Sussex Co. He died at Horsham, Sussex Co., on 21 February 1868, having had six sons:

Test results received from one representative of this family match the markers of descendants of Joseph Burgess of Bergen Co., New Jersey, and of John Burgess of New Haven Co., Connecticut; they have a common Burgess ancestor, name unknown.

Jason Burgess-McManus Connection

[Haplotype R1b1]

The personal name of one individual in the Burgess Surname DNA Project is unknown. This line may be descended from Jason Burgess of Fayette Co., Kentucky.

Test results received from one representative of this line exactly match the numbers of a descendant of the McManus family of Ireland, suggesting very strongly that this particular Burgess line descends from the M(a)cManus Clan. They do not currently match the numbers of any other Burgess Project family.

Joel Burgess of Laurens Co., South Carolina

[Haplotype R1b1]

Note: this family is affiliated with that of John R. Burgess of Clay Co., Alabama, Thomas Burgess Sr. of Scott Co., Kentucky, and Alphonso Davis of Wayne Co., Illinois.

Joel Burgess Sr. was born by 1741 (he had to have been twenty-one years of age in 1762), probably in Virginia. He married Eleanor Heath, daughter of William and Martha Heath (or Hayth) of Bedford Co., Virginia, about 1763. He witnessed a deed of gift of three slaves from J. Bentley Baugh of Chesterfield Co., Virginia to William Walthall of Amelia Co., his brother-in-law, on 10 June 1765 in Amelia Co., Virginia, and is listed there on the 1762-65 tithables lists in Col. Thomas Tabb’s District in Raleigh Parish. Other early Burgesses living in Amelia Co. include Benjamin Burgess, who is listed on the 1736 tithables list, a year after the county was created from Prince George Co.; William Burgess, who bought 300 acres on Long Branch or Little Hurricane Creek in 1740, is listed there on the 1744 tithables list, and is also mentioned there in 1749; John Burgess, mentioned in a 1742 deed as having land on Standley’s Branch of Woody Creek; and Joseph Burgess, a member of the Amelia County Militia in 1758 (“Joel” is sometimes used as a nickname for Joseph).

About 1770 Joel Sr. sued __ Ralls in Bedford Co., Virginia. Shortly thereafter he was forced to provide a peace bond to the Bedford Co. Court, and was fined in 1772 for misbehaving in court. On 24 April 1775 William Heath’s estate was probated in Bedford Co., mentioning as heirs (among others) his son Thomas Heath, his wife Martha, and daughter Eleaner (sic) Burgess. Thomas and Martha then deeded 200 acres of land on Molly’s Creek in Bedford Co. on 22 August 1775 to Joel, per Thomas’s father’s “request that Joel have the land.” Joel and “Elander” sold their land there on 1 January 1778 to William Brown of Augusta Co., Virginia, and again reaffirmed the sale on 21 September 1778. Joel is listed on the 1783 personal property tax list of Bedford Co., Virginia.

Joel Sr. purchased 75 acres of land from Samuel Neighbors on 22 October 1779 (recorded 29 March 1786) on Beaverdam Creek near the Saluda River in Laurens Co., South Carolina. He may have served in February 1781 as a Lieut. in the South Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary War. He witnessed a deed in Laurens Co. from Ratcliff Jowell to Mark Moore on 28 January 1785. He received a 20-acre land grant there in 1786, and sold the combined 95 acres of land on Beaverdam Creek of Little River to Richard Ship on 10 March 1788. He bought 150 acres of land from Lewis Saxon on the South Fork of Raeburns Creek on 13 March 1786, and sold it back to him again on 27 December 1787. He and Lewis Banton bought a set of blacksmith tools, works, furniture, livestock, and books from Benjamin Stone and Joseph Cobbs on 25 June 1790. Joel Sr. bought 200 acres of land from Richard Jowell on Beaverdam Creek of Little River on 5 February 1791.

Joel Sr. is listed on the 1790-1800 censuses for Laurens Co., South Carolina, in 1790 with seven sons over the age of 16, and in 1800 with two sons aged 10-16 and two aged 16-26. He is mentioned in the estate accounting of Thomas Burton there on 29 September 1801, with his sons Walter and Joel Jr.

Joel Sr. is He died in February 1803 in Laurens Co., South Carolina; his will, which was dated 11 February 1803 and probated 2 March 1803, names his wife and sons Roland and Joel Jr. as executors. He had seven sons, which are listed below in the order shown in his will, plus four daughters—Mary Ann, wife of William Wynn Hendricks; Sarah Keziah “Sally,” wife of George Medford; Eleanor “Nelly,” wife of William Hughes; and Martha “Patty,” wife of William Chandler and Robert Box:

*1. Elijah Burgess (1764?-1821) of Walton Co., GA

John Burgess of Rutherford Co., North Carolina

[Haplotype I1c—confirmed by test]

Note: this family is affiliated with that of David Burgess of Spartanburg Co., South Carolina.

John Burgess was born about 1774 in North Carolina. He married Rodia __ about 1803. He may be related to the Matthew Burgess (an uncommon name for the period) who lived in Burke Co., North Carolina, and Greenville Co., South Carolina, and also to the Carter Burgess who lived in Greenville Co. He may be listed in the 1810 census for Halifax Co., North Carolina, with one son aged 10-16, and four sons under the age of 10. He may be the John “Bridges” listed in the 1820 census for Rutherford Co., with three sons aged 10-16 and three under the age of 10—or a second time with two sons aged 16-26, two aged 16-18, two aged 10-16, and two under the age of 10. He is listed in the 1830 census for Rutherford Co., North Carolina, with three sons aged 15-20, two sons aged 10-15, one son aged 5-10, and one son under 5, with John aged 50-60 years; and in 1850 in Cleveland Co., North Carolina, living with his son Thomas; he has not been found in 1840. John Burgess of Union Co., South Carolina

[Haplotype R1b1]

Note: this family is affiliated with that of Thomas Burgess Sr. of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.

John Burgess was born about 1769 in Virginia. He is not the same man as the John Burgess (born 1761) who was the eldest son of Timothy Burgess of the Kershaw District, South Carolina. He married firstly Catherine Draper, daughter of Thomas Draper, about 1789, and secondly Sarah __. He is listed in the 1790-1800 censuses for the Union District, South Carolina (in 1790 with no children), and from 1810-50 in the Spartanburg District and Co., South Carolina. He reportedly died on 1 April 1859 in Union Co., South Carolina, having had two sons, both by his first wife:

*1. Thomas Burgess (1790-1850+) of Spartanburg Co., SC

*2. William Burgess (1798-1861) of Pickens Co., AL

First Branch: Thomas Burgess

Thomas Burgess was born about 1790 in the Union District, South Carolina. He may have married twice, firstly to Mary “Polly” Kirby about 1815, and secondly to Eleanor __ about 1857. He is listed in the 1830-60 censuses for Spartanburg Co., South Carolina; in 1830 he has three sons under the age of 5 and one aged 5-10, and in 1840 one son aged 5-10 and one aged 10-15. He apparently died there between 1860-70, having had at least three sons, two by his first wife, and one by his second:

1. John Burgess I (1819?-1850+) of Benton Co., AL

*2. Marcus Burgess (1828?-1880+) of Chickasaw Co., MS

3. Thomas C. Burgess (1858?-1860+) of Spartanburg Co., SC

Second Son of Thomas

Marcus Burgess was born about 1828 in Spartanburg Co., South Carolina. He married Elizabeth Melton about 1849 in Spartanburg Co. He is listed twice in the 1850 census, on 28 October 1850 in Spartanburg Co. (near his father and older brother, John), and also on 19 February 1851 in Benton Co., Alabama, where he had obviously moved in the interim. He is listed in the 1860 census in Calhoun Co., Alabama, in 1870 in Noxubee Co., Mississippi, and in 1880 in Chickasaw Co., MS. He apparently died in Chickasaw Co. between 1880-1900, having had seven sons:

1. John Burgess III (1850-1870+) of Noxubee Co., MS

2. William Terrie Burgess (1852?-1910?) of Noxubee Co., MS

He is listed in the 1830-60 censuses for Pickens Co., Alabama; his widow is listed as head of the family in 1870-80. He died there in 1861, having had seven sons (an eighth son, James [born about 1820] is listed by some researchers):

5. Joshua Burgess (1831-1877) of Calhoun Co., AL

6. David Burgess (1833-1880+) of Pickens Co., AL

7. Andrew J(ackson?) Burgess (1839- )

Wade Burgess is the ancestor of J. Leon Burgess; Robert Burgess is the ancestor of Eddy D. Burgess.

Test results received from two representatives in this line match each other; they have a common male ancestor, John Burgess I. They also match the numbers of descendants of Thomas Burgess Sr. of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia; they have a common Burgess ancestor, name unknown.

John Burgess is too young to have been a son of Thomas Burgess Sr. of Orange and Pittsylvania Cos., Virginia, and he could only be a son of Rev. Thomas Burgess Jr. if Thomas Jr.’s date of birth is moved back at least six years earlier than presently believed. Descendants of this family match the Western Atlantic Modal Haplotype (WAMH).

John R. Burgess of Clay Co., Alabama

[Haplotype R1b1]

Note: this family is affiliated with that of Joel Burgess of Laurens Co., South Carolina, Thomas Burgess Sr. of Scott Co., Kentucky, and Alphonso Davis of Wayne Co., Illinois.

John R. Burgess was born about 1808, probably in Laurens Co., South Carolina. He is probably descended from Joel Burgess Sr. of Laurens Co. through one of his seven sons, the most likely being Joel Burgess Jr. (of Joel Sr.’s other six sons, Elijah Burgess, Roland Burgess, and John C. Burgess cannot be John R.’s father, and Walter Burgess is unlikely; however, William Burgess and Thomas Burgess have yet to be traced). He married Mary __ about 1829. He is listed in the 1830 census for Autauga Co., Alabama (with one son and one daughter under the age of 5), in 1840 in Talladega Co., Alabama (with two sons aged 5-10), and in 1870 in Clay Co., Alabama, but has not been found in 1850-60; his widow is listed there in the 1880 census, next door to her son, Joel F. Living two doors from him in 1840 is a probable relative, William Burgess, aged 40-50, with two sons aged 10-20; this man is too young to  be Joel’s son, William. John died in Clay Co. before 1880, having had three sons:

1. Son (1830?- )

2. Joel Franklin Burgess (1843-1908) of Clay Co., AL

3. Chesley Burgess (1850- )

Joel Franklin Burgess is the ancestor of J. Kermit J. Burgess.

Test results received from one representative in this line match the numbers of the family of Joel Burgess of Laurens Co., South Carolina, Thomas Burgess Sr. of Scott Co., Kentucky, and Alphonso Davis of Wayne Co., Illinois; they have a common male ancestor, name unknown.

Josiah Burgess of Monroe Co., New York

[Haplotype R1b1b2—confirmed by test]

Note: this family is affiliated with that of Thomas Burgess of Barnstable Co., Massachusetts, Benjamin Burgess of Saint John Co., New Brunswick, Canada, and Thomas Burgess of York Co., Ontario, Canada.

Josiah Burgess was born about 1785, possibly in Connecticut. He may have been the son of a William Burgess, and is possibly descended from Thomas Burgess of Barnstable Co., Massachusetts’s second son, John Burgess Sr. He married Sarah Loomis about 1807. He is listed in the 1810 census for Genesee Co., New York. He died in 1816, either at Pittsford, Monroe Co., NY, or at Smithville, Chenango Co., NY, having had one son:

Keziah Burgess of Bedford Co., Virginia

[Mixed Haplotypes]

Note: One branch of this family is affiliated with that of George Hale of Northumberland Co., Virginia.

Keziah Burgess was born by 1791 in Virginia, possibly the daughter of Mary Burgess, daughter of William Burgess of Bedford Co., VA (see that family), and/or the sister of James Burgess of Fayette Co., West Virginia (see that family). She was bound to John Nichols Sr. in Bedford Co. in 1791 (Nichols was the same person to whom James Burgess was bound in 1795). She is listed in the 1840 census for Barren Co., Kentucky, and in 1860 there living with her son, Armstead L. Burgess Sr.; she has not been found prior to 1840, or in 1850. She died in March 1870 in Barren Co. (at “age 90,” according to the 1870 mortality census), having had three sons by different fathers, all of whom have descendants in the male line:

1. Armstead L(ewis?) Burgess Sr. (1808?-1880+) of Barren Co., KY [Haplotype I1b]

2. Oliver Austin Burgess Sr. (1820-1899) of Barren Co., KY [Haplotype R1b1]

*3. Sparrell Edward Burgess (1826-1902) of Sebastian Co., AR [Haplotype I1a (confirmed by test)]

Third Branch: Sparrell Edward Burgess

Sparrell Edward Burgess was born February 1826 in Virginia. He married firstly Tabitha Jane Jones on 31 December 1844 in Barren Co., Kentucky, and secondly Cynthia Clayton. He is listed in the 1850-60 censuses for Barren Co., Kentucky, and in 1880-1900 in Sebastian Co., Arkansas. He died there on 19 April 1902, having had six sons:

3. Elias M. Burgess (1855- ), died young

4. James Elzia Burgess (1859-1883+) of Barren Co., KY

5. Sparrell Edward Newton Burgess (1862-1939) of Poteau Co., OK

6. Andrew C. Thompson Burgess (1868-1903) of Sebastian Co., AR

Armstead Lewis Burgess Sr. is the ancestor of Ronald L. Burgess; Oliver Austin Burgess Sr. is the ancestor of C. Royce Burgess; William Oliver Burgess is the ancestor of Ronald G. Burgess and William L. Burgess; James Elzia Burgess is the ancestor of W. Marlin Burgess; Sparrell Edward Newton Burgess is the ancestor of Gary L. Burgess.

Test results received from many representatives of this line indicate that Armstead Lewis Burgess Sr., Oliver Austin Burgess Sr., and Sparrell Edward Burgess each had different fathers; the markers of the descendants of Sparrell Burgess match each other exactly. None of their markers currently match the numbers of any other Burgess Project family.

However, the numbers of Ronald L. Burgess match those of a descendant of George Hale of Northumberland Co., Virginia. George Hale was the ancestor of the Bedford Co., Virginia, Hale clan, and thus represents a probable paternal ancestor for the Armstead Burgess line, as well the Joseph Haas family and a Chilcote family.

Richard Edward Burgess

of Marshall Co., Alabama

[Haplotype R1b1]

Note: This family is affiliated with that of William McGee of Los Angeles Co., California.

Richard Edward “Ed” Burgess was born in April 1872 in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, or Alabama (as he variously reportedly in the censuses), or in Walker Co., Georgia, according to his son Hugh’s death record. He married Jeanette “Jennie” Patterson, daughter of Thomas Spencer Patterson and Eliza Jane Rainy, about 1894. He is listed in the 1895 tax assessor record for Meltonsville, Marshall Co., and also for Union Grove; and in the 1900-30 censuses for Marshall Co., Alabama; he has not been found in 1880. Ed Burgess died in Marshall Co., Alabama in April 1937, having had five sons:

1. Homer Eddie Burgess (1896-1972) of Marshall Co., AL

2. Joseph Stanley Burgess (1898- )

3. Thomas Brant Burgess (1899-1946) of Marshall Co., AL

4. Ernest E. Burgess (1901-1976) of Marshall Co., AL

5. Hugh Carlton Burgess Sr. (1903-1989) of Kentucky

Ed Burgess is said to have had a brother who lived in Tyler, Texas. If this story is correct, the only possible candidate appears to be Rev. Milton Wesley Burgess, who was born 16 December 1870 in Talladega Co., Alabama (with both parents born in Alabama), who says he is the son of John Burgess of England and Neely Cameron of Alabama (according to his death certificate). Milton married firstly Mary Ellis __, and secondly Nettie __. He is listed in the 1900 census in Hunt Co., Texas, in 1910-20 in Tyler, Smith Co., Texas, and in 1930 in Navarro Co., Texas. In 1880 he is listed in Callahan Co., Texas, with his mother, Cornelia V., stepfather, William H. Crawford, and sisters Emma E. (born 1869) and Ida Idella (born 1873). His parents appear to be J. W. Burgess and C. V. Burgess, who are listed with their daughter, Emma, in the 1870 census for Clay Co., Alabama (next door to Talladega Co.); this family may be descended from Joseph Burgess son of Mordecai Burgess of the Edward Burgess line of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia (see above). Milton died childless on 19 October 1952 in Grayson Co., Texas. No proof has been found of a connection between the families of Ed Burgess and Milton Burgess.

Hugh Carlton Burgess Sr. is the ancestor of Hugh C. Burgess, Jr.

Test results received from one representative of this family match the numbers of a descendant of William McGee of Los Angeles Co., California; they have a common male ancestor, name unknown. The numbers also match those of the descendants of a major Hancock family branch (see the Hancock DNA Surname Project at Family Tree DNA).

Samuel H. Burgess of Calhoun Co., Florida

[Haplotype R1b1b2h]

Note: This family is affiliated with that of Edward Burgess of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, James Burgess of Jackson Co., Tennessee, William Burgess of Montgomery Co., Maryland, Austin Burgess of Laclede Co., Missouri, and Edward Burgess of Monongalia Co., West Virginia.

Samuel H. Burgess was born about 1792 in Georgia. He married Elizabeth Trice in 1818 in Upson Co., Georgia. He is listed on the 1818-19 tax lists of Baldwin Co., Georgia, and appears there on the 1820 census. He participated in a land lottery in Malcolm’s District in Baldwin Co. in 1821. He is listed on the 1825-26 tax lists of Jones Co., Georgia, and enlisted as an Ensign in the militia there on 21 March 1826. (Both Baldwin and Jones Cos. are adjacent to Jasper Co., Georgia, where Josiah Burgess, son of William Burgess of Montgomery Co., Maryland, lived.) He is listed on the 1830 census in Henry Co., Alabama, and in 1840 in Calhoun Co., Florida; his widow is listed as head of the family there in 1850 with her four younger sons. He settled in Florida by 1835, and filed three land deeds claiming land there at the Tallahassee Land Office in 1837-38. He died in Calhoun Co., Florida about 1841, having had five sons:

He has not been found in any census record. He served in Co. E, 3rd Battalion (the “Holloway Grays”), Georgia Infantry, Confederate Army, during the Civil War, enlisting from Upson Co., Georgia in May 1862, and being discharged for disability at Atlanta in 1863. Carrie appears in the 1870 census for Upson Co., GA as “Carrie Budges,” and in 1900 in McLennan Co., Texas (six of six children then survive). James sold his share of his father’s estate in 1868 in Calhoun Co., Florida. Carrie is listed as an indigent widow (sic) on the Upson Co. Poor Tax register in 1869. James reportedly died in 1873 on a riverboat on the Chattahoochee River at Eufaula, Alabama, while on his way from Florida to Georgia, having had three sons and three daughters:

1. John Floyd Burgess (1857-1934) of Van Zandt Co., TX

He is listed in the 1830-40 censuses for Rockingham Co. (as Sebra Burges), and in the personal property tax lists there from 1830-44 (in 1833 as Siberry Burgess) (it should be noted, however, that the tax lists in Rockingham Co. from 1822-29 did not enumerate polls, but only individuals who owned taxable property); his widow appears there as head of the family in the 1845-51 tax lists, and also in the 1850 census. Sebray Burgess died in Rockingham Co. about 1844, having had at least two sons:
