PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LISTS

Note:  between 1782-83 the lists indicate the number of tithables, the number of slaves, the number of horses, and the number of cattle.  From 1784-86 the lists indicate the number of white males over the age of 21, the number of slaves over the age of 16, the number of slaves under the age of 16, the number of horses, and the number of cattle.  In 1787 the list records the number of white males age 16-21, the number of slaves over the age of 16, the number of slaves under the age of 16, the number of horses, and the number of cattle.  Beginning in 1788, the lists indicate the number of white males over the age of 16, the number of slaves under and over the age of sixteen (second and third digits), and the number of horses (fourth digit).  Zeros straight across indicate no taxable personal property and no tithables (a minor or female as head of household).  There were separate land tax rolls to record the taxation of real property.  The levy of 1808 was never taken.  The county was split into two districts.  The numbering of these districts was not consistent from year to year.
