BURGESSES
IN THE 1787
PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX
LISTS OF VIRGINIA
Note:
In 1987 Netti Schreiner-Yantis and Florene Speakman compiled and
published a three-volume set, The 1787 Census of Virginia, listing all of the individuals recorded
in the 1787 personal property tax lists of Virginia.
They picked this particular year because most of the lists were
readily available, and more information was recorded about the tithables
in this particular year than in the surrounding decades.
The lists record, in the following order: the
person charged with the tax, the number of white males between the age
of 16-21, the number of slaves over the age of 16, the number of slaves
under the age of 16, the number of horses, and the number of cattle.
All of the Burgess names have been abstracted from the volumes
and are enumerated below.
