IN THE 1790
PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX
LISTS OF VIRGINIA
Note:
Stephen and Yvonne Binns have posted on their Binns Genealogy
site (http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~ysbinns/)
the scanned images of a number of the personal property tax lists of
Virginia for 1790 and 1800, plus a comprehensive index.
These
lists amount almost to an every-name annual census of the adult free
males of each of the counties and independent cities of Virginia, West
Virginia, and Kentucky, beginning in 1782. All of the Burgess names
mentioned therein have been abstracted here. The lists record, in the
following order: the number of white names over the age of 16, the
number of slaves over the age of 16, the number of slaves under the age
of 16, and the number of horses. The Binns lists have been supplemented
by research conducted by Michael Burgess and Mary Ann Kaucher. Counties
and independent cities not named have not yet been posted.
