Professor Michael Burgess was born in 1948 at Fukuoka, Japan, on the southern island of Kyushu, the son of a career Air Force officer. He spent his formative years in California, Massachusetts, Turkey, Kansas, Washington State, and Oregon, before settling in Southern California in 1969.

He received his A.B. (Honors) from Gonzaga University in 1969, and his M.S. in L.S. from the University of Southern California in 1970. In the latter year he joined the faculty of California State College (later University), San Bernardino, where he has abided ever since. He achieved tenure in 1975, and was promoted in 1978, 1981, and 1984. He currently serves as Head of Collection Development in the John M. Pfau Library at CSUSB.

He married Mary A. Wickizer Rogers in 1976 at Highland, California. They have two grown children and four grandchildren, one of the latter of whom, Whitney Rogers, was tragically killed in 2001.

Burgess published his first book, his undergraduate honor's thesis, in 1970; his ninety-third monograph was issued in 2002. Many of these works have appeared under his professional pseudonym, Robert Reginald. He has also sold some thirteen thousand short pieces, and has edited roughly 650 books for a half dozen publishers.

His interests include genealogy, history, literature, plus collecting books, ancient coins, fossils, and elden artifacts.

He is generally a much stodgier and more practical fellow than his alter ego, Monsieur Reginald.

When Michael Burgess was first employed as a librarian at the California State College, San Bernardino in September 1970, he was 22 years old and the youngest faculty member ever hired on campus. At the time, the library was housed in the southern half of Sierra Hall and served a community of only 2,300 students. After 35 years of faithful service to the library, Michael retired on Sept. 14, 2005. Read more of this article in the newsletter.
